11.

asked the Minister for Defence the number of cases during the past ten years in which a redress of wrong in accordance with the provisions of the Defence Act, 1954 were presented to the Minister for a decision and if he has satisfied himself that this procedure is an effective means of dealing with the grievances of soldiers.

12.

asked the Minister for Defence the number of occasions in the past ten years in which matters involving a redress of wrongs in accordance with the provisions of the Defence Act, 1954 were presented to the Minister for decision and if he is satisfied that this procedure is an effective means of dealing with the grievances of soldiers.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to take Question Nos. 11 and 12 together.

It would not be possible without disproportionate effort to ascertain the precise number of applications for redress of wrongs pursuant to section 114 of the Defence Act, 1954 submitted to the Minister during the past ten years. It is estimated, however, that the number was about 60.

In relation to the second part of the question, I am satisfied that the procedure provided for in the section mentioned is an effective means of dealing with complaints by members of the Defence Forces.
