Vol. 318 No. 5

Written Answers. - National Understanding Documentation.

17.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will make available to Members of the Oireachtas all the documentation supplied by his Department and the former Department of Economic Planning and Development to the ad hoc committee which drew up the national understanding.

The impetus for the national understanding followed upon the publication of the White Paper "Programme for National Development 1978-1981" and subsequent policy documents issued by the Federated Union of Employers and the Irish Congress of Trade Unions about future pay developments and related matters. Negotiations took place between the Government and the employer organisations and congress both on a tripartite and bilateral basis. These negotiations were confidential to the parties concerned in each case and it would be inappropriate to make public any documentation relating to them. Summary reports on discussions between the Government and employer organisations and the Government and congress are published as appendices to the national understanding.
