Vol. 318 No. 5

Written Answers. - Oireachtas Members Pay and Pensions.

328.

asked the Minister for the Public Service if he will express the Exchequer contribution to the following: (i) pensions of former member of the Oireachtas and officeholders as a percentage of the £94.8 million allocated for public service pensions in the 1980 Estimate, and (ii) the sum allocated for pay of members of the Oireachtas and office-holders as a percentage of the £1,292.4 million allocated for public service pay in the same period.

The Exchequer contribution to pensions of former members of the Houses of the Oireachtas for which provision is included in the 1980 Estimates for Public Services represents 0.52 per cent of the total provision for public service pensions of £94.8 million. Pensions of former office-holders—estimated to cost £288,000 in 1980—which are paid from the Central Fund are not included in the Estimates for Public Services or in this calculation.

The Exchequer contribution to salaries and allowances of Members of the Houses of the Oireachtas and officeholders who are members of the Houses of the Oireachtas for which provision is included in the 1980 Estimates for Public Services represents 0.17 per cent of the total provision for pay of £1,292.4 million.
