Vol. 318 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Connemara Gaeltacht Road Improvements.

30.

asked the Minister for the Environment if his attention has been drawn to the poor condition of main roads in Connemara Gaeltacht area, County Galway and if he will outline the plans for the improvement of these roads.

I am conscious of the needs of the main road network in Connemara and I am anxious to provide the maximum possible grant assistance to Galway County Council towards the cost of works on such roads, having regard to other competing demands for funds at my disposal for road works.

Work on these roads are financed from the county council's own resources supplemented by my Department's annual block grant. The timing and execution of works and the level of investment on any particular main road are matters wholly within the discretion of the county council.

The remaining questions will appear on tomorrow's Order Paper.
