asked the Minister for Defence in respect of himself and each Minister of State assigned to his Department for the six months ended 31 December 1979; the number of journeys made outside the State on official business, by whom he or the Minister of State was accompanied on each journey; the cost to public funds for each such journey, and the purpose of each such journey.

Since taking up my appointment as Minister for Defence I have not made any journey outside the State on official business.

However, my predecessor made one such journey during the period indicated in the question. He was accompanied by the Finance Officer, Department of Defence; the Chief of Staff; the Assistant Chief of Staff; the ADC to the Chief of Staff; and an official from the Department of Foreign Affairs. The cost of the journey is estimated at £7,500. The purpose of the journey was an official visit to the Irish contingent of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon and to Irish military personnel serving with the United Nations Force in Cyprus and with the United Nations Truce Supervision Organisation in Jerusalem.

Ministers of State at the Department of Defence did not undertake any journey abroad on official business during the period in question.

(b) The Vote for Labour has been or will be credited with refunds from the EEC in respect of certain of the visits outlined in the tabular statement. total of credits in respect of such journeys is estimated at £2,780.

(c) A Government plane was used for visits of 16th November and for return journey for Minister and certain officers on 23rd February.

(d) The officers listed for the meetings of the Standing Employment Committee and the Social Affairs Council assisted the Minister in his capacity as President, and the Minister for State at the Department of Education, in the capacity of Irish spokesman. The expenses of the Minister for State will be shown in the reply to a separate question addressed to the Minister for Education.
