Vol. 319 No. 6

Written Answers. - Bantry Sewerage Scheme.

62.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he is aware of the very grave concern in the town of Bantry, County Cork, because of the arrangements whereby the outlet for the new sewerage scheme is adjacent to the bathing area and if he will take steps to have the scheme modified and the outlet extended away from the bathing area.

I am not so aware. Might I refer the Deputy to my replies to his two previous questions on this subject? In my reply of 15 February 1979 I pointed out that the treatment and outfall arrangements approved by my Department for the new sewerage scheme were those decided on by the local authority and their engineering advisers while my reply of 4 March 1980 pointed out that the outfall to sea off Blackrock Point will be well away from the main bathing areas. I am advised that the scheme will result in an immediate improvement in conditions in the harbour area.

There are no proposals before my Department for modification of the scheme under construction.
