Vol. 319 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Whiddy Island Pollution.

7.

asked the Minister for the Environment the extent of pollution from the remaining section of the wreck of the "Betelgeuse" at Whiddy Island, Bantry Bay, the estimated amount of oil still in the wreck, and the plans, is any, to dispose of this and other oil in the vicinity of the wreck.

I understand that the removal of silt from the sea bed as a preliminary to salvage of the remaining section of the wreck has given rise to some slight localised pollution. I also understand that while the amount of oil remaining in the wreck is estimated to be a maximum of 1,000 tons, there is reason to believe that it may be significantly less than this amount. Equipment and personnel are available to deal with any oil which may escape from the wreck.
