Vol. 319 No. 8

Written Answers. - Selection of Judges.

207.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will make a statement on the fact that there is presently an almost exclusively male judiciary, if there are grounds for concern on the basis of sexual discrimination in the choice of judges and if he will make a statement on all criteria involved in such selection.

Members of the judiciary are appointed by the President on the advice of the Government but it is not possible for me to say what criteria have been taken into consideration by successive Governments down the years. An obviously relevant factor is that membership of the legal profession from which judicial appointments are made has been mainly made up of men.
