Vol. 319 No. 9

Written Answers. - School Building Programme.

310.

asked the Minister for Education the number of temporary prefabricated classrooms at present in use in (a) private secondary schools, (b) vocational schools and (c) primary schools, and the plans to remedy this situation under the following headings: (i) how resources will be allocated between the above sectors, (ii) when such plans will be implemented and (iii) which parts of the country are regarded as priority areas in an overall building programme.

According to the records of my Department there are approximately 1,400 temporary prefabricated classrooms in vocational schools and 1,010 in primary schools. Information as to the total number of such classrooms in private secondary schools is not available in my Department but in the period since 1975, 250 prefabricated classrooms have been provided in private secondary schools with the aid of grants from my Department.

The replacement of temporary buildings forms part of the on-going programme of providing additional permanent school accommodation and there is not a specific programme for the replacement of temporary buildings as such. No parts of the country are regarded as priority areas within the overall building programme.
