Vol. 319 No. 10

Written Answers. - Alcholism Policy.

22.

asked the Minister for Health the measures being taken within his Department to combat alcoholism in Ireland.

As the Deputy appreciates there is not a simple answer to this problem.

I think we must develop a comprehensive national policy in regard to the use and abuse of alcohol. I am considering how this might be done and much of the preparatory work has been completed in my Department. It will, of course, involve other Departments as well as my own. In the meantime a number of interim measures have been undertaken.

A pilot course to train selected personnel from the health services in the counselling of alcoholics and their families is now coming to an end. As the trainees return to their posts and apply their new skills an evaluation will be carried out into the effectiveness of the training. In the light of that evaluation a decision will be taken later this year as to whether further training courses will be held.

The Rutland Centre, Clondalkin, a new centre for the treatment of alcoholics operated by a voluntary group, will continue to be supported from public funds for a further year so that its treatment programme can be more fully evaluated.

Campaigns to encourage moderation in the use of alcohol remain a high priority with the Health Education Bureau.
