Vol. 320 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Unemployment Figures.

7.

asked the Taoiseach the Government's estimate of the number of persons aged under 25 years who are currently unemployed and who are not included in the live register of unemployment.

The live register, which consists mainly of applicants for unemployment assistance and claimants for unemployment benefit does not include persons seeking work for the first time, except to a very limited extent. The most recent estimate of persons aged between 15 and 24 years who were seeking regular work for the first time is that available from the labour force survey taken in April 1977; this was 14,500. It should be borne in mind, however, that this figure is obtained from a completely different source from the live register and the data from the two sources are not strictly comparable.

A labour force survey was taken again in 1979 and a further such estimate will be available in the autumn of this year when the results of that inquiry become available.
