Vol. 320 No. 3

Written Answers. - Smokeless Fuels.

65.

asked the Minister for the Environment if it is proposed to introduce legislation or ministerial orders relating to the consumption of smokeless and sulphur free fuels for domestic and industrial use in densely populated areas and if he will designate central city zones where the use of such fuels would be obligatory.

The introduction of measures on the lines suggested by the Deputy is not envisaged at present. A review of the statutory provisions for pollution control which is currently in hand in my Department extends to the arrangements relating to air pollution.

The Deputy will no doubt be aware of the European Community directives on air quality standards for sulphur dioxide and suspended particulate matter which was approved at the Environment Council in December last. The standards set are based on World Health Organisation studies and are designed to protect human health. Ireland is committed to meeting the required health-related standards. Any practicable measures that might prove necessary to this end will be considered.
