Vol. 320 No. 7

Death of President Tito: Expression of Sympathy.

A Cheann Comhairle, tairgim: Go ndéanfaidh Dáil Éireann comhbhrón diacrach le Parlaimint agus pobal an Iugosláiv faoi bhás an Uachtaráin Tito.

I move: That Dáil Éireann extend its deepest sympathy to the Parliament and people of Yugoslavia on the death of President Tito.

I should like on behalf of my party to support this proposal. Marshal Tito's work in maintaining the independence and unity of his country, the balance of power in Europe and the status of the non-alignment movement within the limits of his power to the end of his life, are all matters that leave his country and the world indebted to him.

The Labour Party would like to be associated with the Taoiseach's expression of sympathy on behalf of the Irish Government and the Irish people on the death of President Tito. This man of tremendous vision and courage contributed much towards trying to maintain world peace. He did so by his adherence to the principle of neutrality and non-alignment. One can only hope that, in the future in the readjustment facing the Yugoslav people without their great leader, there will be no interference from any outside source and that our Government will assist in that readjustment in every way possible.

Aontaithe.

Agreed.
