Vol. 320 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cigarette Advertising.

71.

asked the Minister for Health if he will prohibit cigarette advertisements in newspapers under the Tobacco Products (Control of Advertising, Sponsorship and Sales Promotion) Act, 1978, to reduce the incidence of cigarette smoking.

I do not intend to prohibit cigarette advertising in newspapers. The regulations referred to by the Deputy: restrict the advertising media which may be used; limit the content of advertisements; require that certain advertisements for and packages of cigarettes shall bear one of the prescribed health warnings; provide for the curtailment of expenditure on advertising and sponsorship; limit the form which advertising associated with sponsored events may take; and prohibit the use of coupons, gifts, substantial cut-price offers and such like.
