asked the Minister for Justice (a) the number of prison officers recruited each year for the last ten years, (b) the number of prison officers who resigned from the prison service in the same period, (c) the number of prison officers who retired from the prison service in the same period, (d) the number of prison officers employed in the prison service on the 31 December of each year for the same period, (e) the number of prison officers recruited in 1980 to date and (f) the number of prison officers it is planned to recruit for the remainder of 1980 for all prison establishments under his control, including Loughan House but excluding the Curragh Military Detention Centre.

The tabulation, under, sets out (i) the number of prison officers recruited each year for the last ten years—column (a), (ii) the number of prison officers who resigned from the prison service in the same period—column (b), (iii) the number of prison officers who retired from the prison service in the same period—column (c), (iv) the number of prison officers employed in the prison service on 31 December of each year—column (d).

The tabulation, also, sets out under each heading the position in respect of the year 1980, up to and including 19 May 1980.

It is my intention to have a further 170 officers, approximately, recruited and trained/in training for the remainder of 1980.
