Additional statutory salmon conservation measures were introduced in 1979 to combat the decline in our salmon stocks in recent years. These measures include a reduction in the length of the salmon fishing season for all fishing engines. While I am keeping the salmon stock position under close review, present indications are that an extension of the fishing season for salmon draft net fishing would not be warranted this year.
For similar reasons I am not prepared to increase the prescribed maximum length of drift net which may be used for salmon fishing out of Broadhaven Bay, County Mayo.
