Vol. 322 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Present Value of Punt.

4.

asked the Taoiseach the present value of the punt based on the purchasing value of one year ago.

It is estimated on the basis of the consumer price index that £1 (Irish) at mid-February 1980 purchased the same quantum of goods and services at retail prices as 86.6 pence would have purchased at mid-February 1979.

Is it on the increase?

It depends on what dates one takes. I was looking at 1975 when it was four times as much.

If the Minister would go back to 1943 or 1945 he would see that the unemployment figure was 175,000 and when 50,000 were emigrating each year.

1975 will do me now.

Has Deputy L'Estrange no meeting to attend today?

(Interruptions.)

Are you finished with the Deputy, a Leas-Cheann Comhairle? I wanted to ask a supplementary question.

We are never finished with Deputy L'Estrange.

(Interruptions.)

If you would give me an old State car I would go down to the meeting.

(Interruptions.)
