Vol. 322 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Telephone Service.

14.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when the public telephone kiosks in Limerick city will be repaired and made operational; the plans, if any, to make public telephone kiosks vandal-proof; and the cost of repairing vandalised telephone kiosks in the past six months.

Repair of public telephone kiosks in Limerick City is taking place on a continuing basis but it is not possible to ensure that they will all be working always. At present, five of the 61 are out of order. It is expected these five will be restored to service over the next two weeks or so.

Public telephone kiosks cannot be made vandal-proof but various measures have been taken and continue to be taken to reduce their liability to damage. These include the use of specially strengthened coinboxes and a new type of kiosk more of which will be brought into service this year.

The actual cost of repairing damaged kiosks over the past six months is not readily available but is estimated to be somewhere in excess of £50,000.

Is the figure of £50,000 referable only to Limerick or to the whole country?

To the whole country.

15.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the date application for telephone service was made by a person (details supplied) in County Galway; the reason for the delay in providing service; and when this service will be provided.

Service was applied for in February 1977. It was not possible to provide it because of the substantial amount of engineering work involved in doing so and the volume of other urgent engineering work requiring attention in the area. It is expected that service will be provided before the end of this year.

Before the election.
