Vol. 322 No. 5

Written Answers. - Social Work Posts.

372.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he will state the deployment of social work posts funded directly or indirectly by his Department in each (a) health board area and (b) community care area.

Information regarding the areas in which social workers employed by local authorities are deployed is not available in my Department, since the deployment of these officers is entirely a matter for the local authority concerned. Information furnished by local authorities to my Department indicates that the following local authorities have one or more posts of social worker on their establishment: County Councils: Carlow, Clare, Kildare, Kilkenny, Leitrim, Monaghan, Roscommon, Sligo, Tipperary (N.R.), Wicklow, Wexford—one post each. Galway, Limerick, Mayo, Dublin—two posts each. Cork—three posts. Galway Corporation—two posts. Limerick Corporation, Dundalk Urban District Council—one post each.

A number of local authorities also employ other officers, who have social science qualifications and/or relevant experience in community or social work and who are engaged in community or social work. Details are as follows: Cork Corporation—three Housing Welfare Officers. Dublin Corporation—one Community Development Officer, one Chief Welfare Officer, two Assistant Community Development Officers, five Senior Housing Welfare Officers, 24 Housing Welfare Officers, 11 Area Community Officers and 11 Area Community Workers. Limerick Corporation—two Housing Welfare Officers. Waterford Corporation—one Housing Welfare Officer. Dun Laoghaire Corporation—two Community Liaison Officers. Dublin County Council—three Housing Welfare Officers, three Area Community Officers.
