Vol. 322 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Live Register.

2.

asked the Taoiseach the estimated number of persons under 25 years who are on the live register and who are unemployed at present.

The number of persons aged under 25 years who were on the live register on 30 May 1980 was 20,618.

What proportion of the total unemployed is this figure? Is the Minister satisfied that the policies and programmes being pursued by his Government will be sufficient to reverse this trend?

This is a statistical question. A policy matter would be for another Minister.

Does the Taoiseach give any hope to the thousands of young people who are looking for jobs and apparently they will not be there for them?

The Government are naturally making every effort possible to provide more employment and I take it that the Opposition will help in that worthy drive.

We will help put the Government out.
