Vol. 322 No. 6

Written Answers. - Killarney Lands.

344.

asked the Minister for Finance if his Department have purchased, or intend to purchase, land in Killarney, County Kerry; and, if so, the purpose for which the land is required.

Over the past eight years the Commissioners of Public Works have acquired different areas in Killarney totalling in all about 10,000 acres. The most recent acquisition was that from Mr. John McShain and included Mr. McShain's interest in the Middle and Lower Lakes. The lands acquired adjoin the lakes and are an extension of the Bourn Vincent Memorial Park, comprising about 10,500 acres, which was donated to the State in 1932 by Mr. and Mrs. Bowers Bourn and Senator Arthur Vincent for management as a national park. The additional areas were acquired to extend the park and thus conserve the natural features and beauty of the area and prevent unsuitable development.

In Killarney, as elsewhere, the commissioners from time to time purchase properties for the purpose of providing accommodation for state employees and other State purposes. At present they are considering the purchase of a property for the erection of a Garda station and a maintenance garage for the Department of Posts and Telegraphs.
