asked the Minister for Social Welfare the number of appeals against the decisions of the deciding officers received in his Department in the past year to the latest available date and the proportion of these appeals that were subsequently allowed.

In the year ended 31 December 1979 a total of 6,132 appeals against the decisions of deciding officers were received. The number decided by appeals officers in that period was 5,925. An average of 36 per cent of these decisions were decided in favour of the appellant.
