Vol. 322 No. 11

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Public Service Entry Qualification.

68.

asked the Minister for the Public Service whether the leaving certificate is regarded as an essential qualification for any public service job; the approximate percentage of public service jobs filled in any year which require this qualification; and the reasons such a qualification is required.

There are a number of grades in the civil service for which applicants are required to have attained a standard of education of the level of the leaving certificate of the Department of Education. In 1979 the number of persons selected for appointment from competitions at which that requirement applied amounted to 8 per cent of all the candidates selected by the Civil Service Commissioners. This standard of education is required for these grades because it is considered the appropriate level at which to recruit people for the duties of the grades in question.
