Vol. 322 No. 11

Written Answers. - Civil Service Retirement Pensions.

65.

asked the Minister for the Public Service the number of civil servants in receipt of retirement pensions for the year ended 5 April 1980; the amount of money paid in such pensions; the amount of income tax paid by those persons for that year, the percentage of such represented by income tax; and if such pensions were attached to the pay-related index figure to safeguard recipients against inflation and rising prices.

The number of former civil servants in receipt of retirement pensions on 5 April 1980 was 8,387. The total amount paid in the year ending 5 April 1980 was £16,307,931. Income Tax deducted from this amount was £1,018,044, representing 12 per cent of the total. Virtually all of the pensioners in question have their pensions revised each year by reference to current salary levels.
