asked the Minister for Education the number of persons in receipt of retirement teacher pension for the year ended 5 April 1980, the amount of State money paid to recipients and the amount paid in income tax by them for that year; and the amount the pension was increased in the year so as to safeguard them against inflation and rising prices.

Particulars of the total amounts of pensions paid to retired national and secondary teachers, and to dependants of former national and secondary teachers, the total amounts paid by them in respect of income tax and the total amounts by which their pensions were increased in the year ended 31 March 1980 are given in the form of a tabular statement which, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, will be circulated with the Official Report.
The pensions of national and secondary teachers are not directly linked to the cost of living. They are revised annually, with effect from 1 July, to give pensioners the benefit of any salary increases awarded to serving teachers during the previous 12 months. Following is the statement:
