asked the Minister for Industry, Commerce and Tourism (a) the total number of new jobs created, (b) the total number of job losses, (c) the average level of employment in respect of industry, services and agriculture and (d) the total cost from public funds of job creation programmes including IDA grants etc in each of the past ten years.

: Official employment statistics did not provide information in the detail requested by the Deputy for the period in question. However, according to data compiled by the Central Statistics Office, the numbers employed in manufacturing industry, for which I have primary responsibility, as at April in each of the past ten years were as follows (figures in '000s): 1970, 213; 1971, 214; 1972, 212; 1973, 217; 1974, 224; 1975, 214; 1976, 207; 1977, 215; 1978, 219; 1979, 227.

Total capital expenditure (including grants) on job creation in industry by the Industrial Development Authority and the Shannon Free Airport Development Company Limited, which are under my aegis, for each of the last ten years was as follows:—

These figures do not include re-equipment grants which primarily relate to job maintenance, expenditure by the State manufacturing companies, administration expenses of the two agencies mentioned or expenditure by other agencies under my Department which are not directly involved in job creation. In addition the firgures do not include fiscal reliefs of one kind or another or general infrastructural expenditure.
