Vol. 323 No. 9

Written Answers . - Polish Cable Dumping .

367.

asked the Minister for Industry, Commerce and Tourism if he is aware that Polish cable imports are at present being dumped on the Irish market to the detriment of employment in domestic companies and, in particular of one company (details supplied); and the steps he proposes to take to stop such dumping.

: Total imports of housewiring cables in the period January-September 1980 were at a level significantly below the average for 1977 to 1979 inclusive. Imports from Poland form only a minute proportion of total imports, but I am aware that they have given rise to complaints.

The investigation of allegations of dumping from Third countries into the European Economic Community and the remedial action to be taken where complaints are upheld are now matters for the Commission of the EEC. There are strict criteria which must be satisfied before injurious dumping can be established. My Department is, of course, prepared to assist Irish manufacturers in formulating cases for investigation by the Commission.
