Vol. 324 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - National Soccer Team.

37.

asked the Minister for Education if he will take steps to promote the idea of one Irish national soccer team; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Already, I have indicated that I would welcome and be prepared to assist in any way possible towards such a development. If, at any future date, it becomes appropriate for me to take any special initiative I will be happy to do so.

Why has the Minister not taken an initiative?

The Deputy will appreciate that these two associations are voluntary organisations. I had discussions with one of them and indicated what I would like, but I am not in any position to direct either of the associations as to what they should do.

Has the Minister made any approaches to his counterpart in the North of Ireland as to whether he will approach the corresponding body there?

When Lord Melchett was my counterpart we both indicated our interest and we shared the view that having regard to the nature of the two organisations it was not appropriate for us to direct them as to what they might do, beyond expressing our opinions.

Would the Minister be prepared to call a meeting of the associations to discuss this subject?

If I were happy that both organisations would welcome such a meeting, I would take that action but this is not my information.
