Vol. 324 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Waterford School.

9.

asked the Minister for Education if he will immediately sanction a major extension to the national school at Fenor, County Waterford.

An extension to Fenor national school has already been approved in principle and sketch-plans have been prepared by the Commissioners of Public Works. The school authorities have examined the plans and do not consider them acceptable. Their views have been conveyed to the Commissioners of Public Works and a report is awaited from the commissioners.

When does the Minister expect a decision in the matter to be given?

With all due haste. The fact that the school authorities thought that the plans were not acceptable has delayed the whole process. I know there is a need in the area and the Commissioners of Public Works have been asked to report as quickly as possible.

Is the Minister aware that the school at present consists of two very small classrooms and that the school authorities consider that they need three large classrooms together with a general purposes room? In view of the numbers attending the school I do not think that that is unreasonable. Would the Minister look into the matter?

The basis of the argument is that the plans were not acceptable to the school authorities. We were of the opinion that what we suggested would be suitable and adequate and we will have to come to an agreement on what is adequate.
