Vol. 324 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Tramore (Waterford) Traffic Wardens.

29.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he is aware of the danger to children leaving the boys' and girls' schools in Tramore, County Waterford; if he will provide moneys to have traffic wardens appointed at those schools; if he is further aware of the request for a subvention made to him by the Tramore Town Commissioners; and if he will outline his response to that request.

30.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he will make special moneys available to Tramore Town Commissioners to allow them to appoint traffic wardens for the schools in Tramore, County Waterford, in view of the serious traffic hazard at these schools, and if he will make a statement on the matter.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 29 and 30 together.

Under section 96 of the Road Traffic Act, 1961, the provision of a school warden service is a matter for the local authority to arrange, subject to the consent of the Commissioner of the Garda Síochána.

I have no funds at my disposal for the provision of special financial assistance to local authorities for the operation of school warden services and I have advised the Tramore Town Commissioners accordingly in response to a request received from that body. It is however open to the commissioners to consider asking the county council to enter into an agreement with them under the Local Government Act, 1955, whereby the county council would operate the service for them.
