Vol. 324 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Commercial Vehicle Regulations.

33.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he is satisfied that the new axle weight loads being agreed in the EEC for large commercial trucks, that is, juggernauts, can be adequately carried on all Irish roads; if he has had consultations with the Department of Transport regarding the co-ordination of efforts between his Department and that Department on this matter; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The permissible axle weights for large commercial vehicles have for some time been under discussion by the EEC Council Working Party on Transport Questions at which Ireland is represented by the Department of Transport. A consensus of agreement has not so far emerged from these discussions, which are attended also by my Department. There is full co-ordination of Ireland's approach to the issue to which the Deputy refers.
