Vol. 325 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Adoption Legislation.

27.

asked the Minister for Justice if, arising out of a reply to Parliamentary Question No. 1 of 30 October 1980, he will indicate those aspects of adoption legislation which were suggested for consideration in the note prepared by An Bord Uchtála and on the basis of which his Department are now seeking proposals from some research bodies.

The deputy appears to have misinterpreted my reply to his question of 30 October 1980. In my reply I indicated that An Bord Uchtála had prepared a note which set out aspects of adoption that they would welcome research into. The proposed research is not concerned with adoption legislation but rather with a survey of the adoption process in this country and the parties involved.

Is that process, which will ultimately lead to legislation, nearing completion?

No, the study has not started yet. We are still trying to come to grips with the type of survey. We are trying to make sure that it is properly representative. I gave the Deputy an assurance before, and I want to reiterate now, that I am as keen on this survey getting under way as he is.

Can the Minister do anything about speeding it up?

I will do my best.
