A total sum of £17,800 was paid in respect of rewards for the year 1979. Of this amount a sum of £13,625 was paid to customs and excise staff for the detection of smuggling. The five highest amounts paid were as follows: one higher officer, Customs and Excise, received a total of £281; four officers, Customs and Excise, received amounts totalling £249, £210, £160 and £159 respectively.
