Vol. 325 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Divorce Prohibition.

1.

asked the Taoiseach if he is aware of the findings of the latest opinion poll which indicate that a majority of the people in the Republic would support the dropping of the constitutional prohibition on divorce; and if the Government are prepared to review their policy on this matter in view of this strong indication of public opinion.

I am aware of the survey referred to by the Deputy. The Government's position is as indicated by me in reply to a parliamentary question on 15 April 1980.

Is the Taoiseach effectively saying that he is passing the buck on this issue to some future Government which will have more courage and compassion?

A question, please, not argument.

Is the Taoiseach passing the buck?

If we were passing it on to some future Government we would be passing it to ourselves for the foreseeable future.

That is hysterical not historical.

Is the Taoiseach saying that it is not a question of whether divorce will be introduced but when it will be introduced?

I have already outlined the Government's position with regard to divorce.

Does the Taoiseach believe that divorce here is necessary or not?

I have indicated the Government's position in the matter.

Answer "yes" or "no".
