Vol. 325 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - An Slua Mhuirí.

31.

asked the Minister for Defence the role he envisages for An Slua Mhuirí; and if he considers that the training, experience and number of personnel indicate any meaningful role for it in Naval Service operations.

The role laid down for An Slua Muirí is to assist the Naval Service in seaward defence, port control and examination of vessels and training is directed towards making the personnel involved proficient in these tasks. The present effective strength is 424 all ranks and with the training and experience available I am satisfied that in an emergency situation An Slua would be capable of fulfilling a meaningful and effective role in support of the Naval Service.
