Vol. 326 No. 1

Written Answers. - Calf Export Regulations.

336.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will explain the reason for introducing regulations on the export of calves, especially to Italy; if he is aware that the regulations caused substantial losses for many farmers; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The only regulations which were recently introduced related to testing for oestrogens (hormones). These regulations stem from a requirement of the Italian Ministry of Health that, from 20 October 1980, calves being imported into Italy must be accompanied by a veterinary certificate indicating that the animals come from a holding where oestrogenic substances are not used.

Trade with Italy in calves has not, in fact, been hampered by these requirements as the necessary certification is being provided by veterinary practitioners. I am not, therefore, aware that substantial losses have been incurred by farmers as a result of the Italian requirements. In fact, prices for calves have been extremely buoyant here in recent weeks.

Proposals for control on the use of hormones in livestock production in member states are currently being examined by the EEC.
