Vol. 326 No. 1

Written Answers. - State Cars.

274.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will state in respect of each State car assigned to the Taoiseach, and his predecessor, each Minister and Minister of State in each of the years 1977, 1978, 1979 and 1980: (a) the mileage covered, (b) the petrol consumed, (c) any other expenses incurred in respect of repairs or replacement of State cars, (d) the cost of insurance in each case and (e) the total cost of each.

The total number of miles covered by the official cars assigned to the Taosieach and each Minister and Minister of State during the year ended 31 December 1980 is shown in tabular statement No. 1 attached.

The mileage covered during the year ended 31 December 1979 was given in my reply to a Question on 4 March 1980 (see Dáil Debates, Vol. 318, No. 6, Columns 1171-2).

Statistics showing the relevant mileage figures for 1977 and 1978 are not available and would be particularly difficult to compile at this stage. However, a return showing the approximate mileage travelled during the twelve months ended 31 July 1978 was compiled at the time and the figures are given in tabular statement No. 2 attached.

With regard to cost, the position is that, as I have indicated in reply to previous Questions, precise costings are difficult to make but, on the basis of a detailed analysis carried out some years ago and allowing for subsequent increases in pay and allowances and in the cost of cars, fuel etc., it has been calculated that the average cost per user, including depreciation, petrol, oil, tyres, repairs and maintenance, driver costs, etc., was £23.900 in 1977, £26,300 in 1978, £30,000 in 1979 and £36,500 in 1980. As the State carries its own insurance, insurance premiums are not paid, but the costings include an estimated figure to cover the consequential cost to the State.
