Vol. 326 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Roadside Traders.

20.

asked the Minister for Justice the action he proposes to take to deal with the traffic problem caused by roadside traders, which has become a serious issue in parts of County Donegal.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that they are not aware of traffic problems being caused by roadside traders in County Donegal. Should any such problem come to the notice of the Garda it will receive the necessary attention.

I do not wish to dispute the advice the Minister has received from the Garda authorities in Donegal because I have great respect for them, but somebody is not reading——

Will the Deputy please ask a question?

Is the Minister aware that roadside traders are causing havoc to passing traffic by trading along the sides of the roads? Those involved are mostly itinerant travelling people.

I am giving the Deputy the information given to me.

I reject that information. I would not have put down a question if I did not know it was true that a traffic problem is being caused by roadside traders.

I got the information from the Garda Síochána in County Donegal.

The Minister may send them a note that I reject that information, as will the people in Donegal.

The Deputy has no trouble in sending his own notes.

Is the Minister aware of similar problems in other areas, with particular reference to Cork——

Question No. 20 relates specifically to County Donegal.

The Minister may have further information in his his brief. Is he aware of roadside traders taking over private property and the property of local authorities——

That does not relate to the question. I am calling Question No. 21.

Would the Minister like to go back to Donegal for a while? He spent a few weeks there for a less worthy purpose.

Will the Minister please reply to the next question?
