andMr. Mannion asked the Taoiseach the prices of each of the following goods on the Consumer Price Index at 31 January 1981 and at 31 January 1977: bread, butter, milk, cheese, beef, flour, mutton, bacon, beer, stout, all alcoholic spirits, cigarettes, coal, bottled gas, town gas, electricity, telephone charges and rent, postage stamps, petrol, briquettes, tea, sugar, eggs and clothing.

The Consumer Price Index is calculated in respect of mid-February, mid-May, mid-August and mid-November each year. Information on national average prices is given below in so far as it is available for the periods mid-February 1977 and mid-November 1980 which are the closest to the dates specified. For certain items only percentage changes in the national average price levels can be provided.
