Vol. 326 No. 11

Ceisteanna — Questions Oral Answers - Mayo Advance Factory.

5.

asked the Minister for Industry, Commerce and Tourism the arrangements the IDA have made to have a tenant occupy the advance factory at Kiltimagh, County Mayo.

I am assured by the Industrial Development Authority that every effort is being made to secure a suitable industrial project for the 24,000 sq. ft. advance factory at Kiltimagh. Eight industrialists have been brought to visit the factory since its completion in March 1980 but as yet no firm proposals have emerged.

What special consideration is being given to this area in a county — I am sure that the Minister is aware of this coming from the area — where the unemployment level was twice the national average for 1980? We were given to understand that because of the acute unemployment problems special consideration would be given to this part of the country. What is so special about the fact that this factory is still lying vacant a year after its completion? What special efforts over and above the ordinary efforts made are being considered for this area?

The Deputy will be aware of the benefits of having an advance factory located in that area.

I am not questioning that.

This area has been described as the black triangle. Since we came to office we have provided an advance factory at Charlestown, work for 200 people at Swinford through the extension of Travenol and an advance factory at Kiltimagh. The IDA are about to build an advance factory at Foxford. In relation to Kiltimagh, 33 more people have been employed, which increases the employment in the area by 24 per cent.

Is the Minister serious in claiming credit for the Travenol extension in Swinford? We are not that naive on this side of the House or in Swinford either.

Deputies should only ask questions.
