Vol. 326 No. 11

Ceisteanna — Questions Oral Answers - Prison Expenditure.

31.

asked the Minister for Justice (i) the estimated cost of expenditure on Loughan House expressed per each child resident there; and (ii) the estimated cost of new prisons in the coming year.

(i) Loughan House accommodates about 25 boys on average at present. Taking all current expenditure into account—that is the cost of the high level of staffing, victualling and so on but not capital costs—the expenditure per boy in 1980 worked out at about £40,500 per boy. (ii) it is estimated that £6.3 million will be spent on new prisons. including staff accommodation at them during the current financial year.
