Vol. 326 No. 12

Written Answers. - Educational Needs of Travelling People.

255.

asked the Minister for Education whether he has received the third report on the educational needs of travelling people; and the action he intends to take to implement its recommendations.

I presume the Deputy is referring to the Third Report on the Educational Needs of Travelling People which has recently been prepared by the National Co-ordinator. I have seen this report and I have noted its recommendations.

During the current school year I have authorised the appointment of a visiting teacher for the children of travellers in Galway city area. This is a pilot scheme and as soon as I receive a report on the progress of its operation I will be in a position to consider the matter further.

Applications for assistance in the provision of preparatory or pre-school classes or for the establishment of special classes where warranted will be favourably considered by my Department.

My Department are co-operating with AnCO and the Department of the Environment in the operation of training centres for travelling teenagers and young adults by the provision of teaching and other services through Vocational Education Committees. I would propose to continue this co-operation.
