Vol. 327 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Acquisition of Lambay Island.

18.

asked the Minister for Finance whether Lambay Island has been the subject of discussion with a view to its acquisition by the Government.

The Deputy will recall that in reply to a question on 16 April 1980 I told him that discussions were being held with the owner of Lambay Island. At the time the owner had indicated that he was considering the future of the island and there seemed a possibility that it might be available for acquisition. There have been no further developments to date.

Is the Minister still negotiating with this person? Could he be a little more forthcoming? Is it still a live possibility that we might get this island? It would be a magnificent proposition, if it did happen, for the people of north Dublin.

The acquisition of desirable property for State purposes and public use can take place under varying conditions and different arrangements. Consideration of suitable arrangements of the possible ultimate acquisition of the property is at present taking place.

It is going on?

It would be premature at this stage to disclose any details now being considered.

But it is still going on? The Minister is still negotiating?

It is still under consideration.

Would the Minister say if he is considering entering into negotiations or is he negotiating at present?

Considering entering into negotiations.

In view of the fact that it appears this man is thinking of disposing of the island, does the Minister not agree that if he does not make up his mind about entering into some kind of negotiations he may miss this valuable opportunity of providing a first-class amenity for north Dublin?

I assure the Deputy that we will not miss any opportunity. We shall keep a very close eye on it.
