Vol. 327 No. 4

Written Answers. - Crime at Sea Detection.

259.

asked the Minister for Finance what facilities the Revenue Commissioners have to detect crime at sea such as drug smuggling; if any vessels are available or planned for this task; if coasts or harbours other than main ports are patrolled; and if he is satisfied with the present position.

The detection of crime at sea is not primarily the responsibility of the Revenue Commissioners but customs and excise officers, in co-operation with the Garda, maintain surveillance on potential smuggling in all harbours and other coastal areas. While no vessels are operated by the Revenue Commissioners, I am satisfied that existing arrangements for surveillance are adequate.
