Vol. 327 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Galway Milk Supplies.

18.

asked the Minister for Health if he is aware that the Galway fresh milk suppliers' association are not satisfied with the decision that will prevent them from supplying milk to consumers in Galway in the near future; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Galway Corporation requested me to make an Order in accordance with section 33 of the Milk and Dairies Act, 1935 to prohibit as from 1 April 1981 the sale of milk in the Borough of Galway unless such milk complies with one of the four standards for milk designated by the Minister for Agriculture. Two of these designations relate to non-pasteurised milk and two to pasteurised milk.

Prior to submitting their application to me Galway Corporation considered representations from the Galway Milk Suppliers Association but having regard to medical and veterinary advice nevertheless requested me to make the necessary order. That order was accordingly made by me on 16 June 1980.

Question No. 19 is for written reply.
