Vol. 327 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Marginal Land Tree Planting.

47.

asked the Minister for Fisheries and Forestry whether he has any proposals to encourage owners of marginal land to plant trees, in view of the world shortage of timber and the increasing cost of imports.

As an incentive to landowners to embark on private forestry, my Department operate a planting grants scheme, the terms of which were substantially improved by me last year. A free technical advisory service is an integral feature of the scheme. In addition, private tree planting in the western region will receive a major stimulus through the forestry proposals embodied in the EEC "Western Package".
