Vol. 327 No. 9

Ceisteanna-Questions. Oral Answers. - RTE News Gathering Equipment.

6.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the reason for the delay in completing work to allow for the operation of electronic news gathering (ENG) equipment by RTE; and when it is expected that this work will be completed.

I am not clear what work precisely the Deputy has in mind as it is possible to use the equipment referred to on the existing telephone network.

A new TV micro-wave link network which will permit the more efficient use of ENG equipment is being installed and is expected to be ready for service in about six months' time.

I wish to highlight the fact that the microwave link has not been completed. There seems to have been a considerable delay in the Minister's Department.

There has not been any delay. It is on target.

When was work started?

It was started in 1980 as planned. We are a month in advance of schedule.

Was the equipment available before 1980?

What equipment?

The equipment which is being installed for the microwave link.

If we are installing the microwave equipment how could it be available before 1980?

The equipment could have been available four years ago.

It was not.

Is the Minister saying it was not?

I do not think the Deputy is quite clear about the question he is asking?

I am very clear about it. I believe the equipment has been available for a considerable time.
