Vol. 327 No. 11

Written Answers. - Kerry Unemployment.

286.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware that a deputation from the local branch of the Irish Transport and General Workers' Union attended a special meeting of Tralee Urban District Council which was held recently in connection with the large number of unemployed people in Tralee and the rest of County Kerry; and, if so, if he will now make a statement on this very serious situation.

I do not have detailed information on the meeting referred to and I am unable, therefore, to make a statement on it. I am aware that while the present recession has caused unemployment to rise in the Tralee district and in County Kerry in general, the percentage increase is less than the average for the country as a whole.

I am confident that adherence to the terms of the second national understanding together with implementation of the investment plan 1981 and the promotional activities of the Industrial Development Authority and Údarás na Gaeltachta, will enable significant progress to be made in reducing the level of unemployment in County Kerry and in the country as a whole.
