Vol. 328 No. 5

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Bakery Trade Commission.

15.

asked the Minister for Industry, Commerce and Tourism if there is a commission investigating the bakery trade; if so, when it was established; the names of the members; and its terms of reference.

There is no commission under the aegis of my Department investigating the bakery trade. However, as indicated in their December report, the National Prices Commission, have asked their consultancy unit to examine the general state of the bread bakery industry in Ireland with specific reference to such matters as the effects of price control and market forces on price levels and employment in the industry. It is an integral part of the price control procedure for the NPC to arrange for their consultancy unit to examine different sectors of industry when they consider that such an examination would facilitate them in the discharge of their functions. Such activities are carried out as part of the normal day-to-day duties of the consultancy unit and the formal assignment of staff to such duties or the formal drawing up of terms of reference does not arise.

When does the Minister expect the consultants to report back to the NPC?

I do not have that information at the moment.
