Vol. 328 No. 9

Written Answers. - Fire Drills in Educational Establishments.

332.

asked the Minister for Education whether he has given an instruction that fire drills should be carried out in (a) primary, (b) post-primary and (c) third level educational establishments; and, if so, how often such exercises are expected to occur.

A circular issued by my Department in September 1971 to school authorities instructed that fire drills in primary and post-primary schools should be held at least twice per term. This circular is being reissued shortly.

The booklet Fire Danger in the School, prepared by the Fire Prevention Council, was issued via my Department earlier this year to primary and post-primary school authorities. The departmental circular which accompanied it recommended that fire drills be carried out regularly in schools (Circular 7/81, issued in January 1981).
